Make City Pollution Free By Avoiding Plastic Item: GHMC

Hyderabad, July 3 (Maxim News): Single use of plastic items should be avoided to make a healthy living conditions and responsibility of citizens that they can do something to their city in making a pollution free city, said Dr.B. Janardhan Reddy, Commissioner GHMC here today.

As a part of initiative to use alternative items in place of single use of plastic material, GHMC invited representatives of Restaurants/ Hoteliers / sweet shops / Bakery shops/supermarkets and malls to be a part of this initiative and to take active part as a Corporate Social Responsibility.

During the meeting, the Commissioner suggested to businessmen to be associated with the cause and encourage the consumers to use Jute bags, cloth bags and steel boxes instead of plastic bags. Some 500 metric tons of single use plastic waste was being generated every day in the GHMC limits and only 10 to 15 percent of it was being recycled. With this, a lot of problems were being faced like polluting water, decomposing ground water and creating ecological imbalance and obstructing free flow storm water drain, harmful to health and it takes about 100 years to dissolve in earth and it is a great challenge in disposing.

Commissioner appealed the participants under CSR to provide crushing machines so as to the waste plastic is recycled at its maximum and have compost unit those who generate more waste in the restaurants and marriage halls. He also suggested to the Marriage hall owners to start with in avoiding single use of plastic by step by step like in first phase 1. Stop using plastic spoons 2. Water glass 3. Ice cream cups and so on. The Commissioner said the Restaurants/ Hoteliers / sweet shops / Bakery shops/supermarkets and malls to stop printing their brands on carry bags and paint Swachh Namaskar at their entrance so that the message spread and influence in creating awareness among the citizens about their sense responsibility in maintaining neat and clean surroundings to make hygienic and pollution free city. In response to the Commissioner’s appeal, the representatives assured that they would cooperate with the GHMC in making the city a livable one.

Later, an official from Indore explained how they achieved 100% segregation at source and how they managed to recycle waste plastic more effectively because of with active participation of citizens by crating awareness about their responsibility at source The representative from Demart, Anil Trading Company, Bassera Hotel, Shagouse, Pista House, Taj Group of Hotels, Karachi Bakery etc attend the meeting Addl.Commissioners Musharaf Ali, Ms Siktha Patnaik, Ms.Shruthi Oja and other senior officials participated in the meeting.
