Rajnath Singh to Lead India’s Anti-Terror Push at SCO Defence Ministers’ Meet in China

Delhi/Hyderabad, June 24 (Maxim News): In a significant diplomatic move, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will advocate for stronger collective action against terrorism at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ meeting in Qingdao, China, on June 25-26. The visit marks Singh’s first trip to China since tensions escalated between the two nations following the Ladakh standoff in 2020.

The Defence Minister’s visit follows India’s Operation Sindoor, a high-impact airstrike operation targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) after the Pahalgam terror attack last month. Singh is expected to press the SCO to intensify joint efforts against terrorism, extremism, and cross-border threats that undermine regional peace and stability.

“This is an opportunity to reaffirm India’s commitment to SCO’s principles of sovereignty, non-interference, and mutual respect, while pushing for coordinated action on security challenges,” the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

During the SCO conclave, Singh will also emphasize:

  • The need for deeper economic ties, trade cooperation, and connectivity within the SCO bloc.
  • The importance of multilateralism and respect for the territorial integrity of all member nations.
  • India’s vision for a secure and prosperous regional future.

Apart from his address at the plenary, Singh is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from China, Russia, and other member states, aiming to strengthen defence diplomacy.

The visit comes amid ongoing efforts to normalise India-China relations, strained since the Galwan Valley clash in June 2020. Notably, NSA Ajit Doval is also in China for the SCO National Security Advisors’ meeting, where he is engaging with regional counterparts on key security concerns. Recent diplomatic breakthroughs include disengagement at Demchok and Depsang and the revival of the Special Representatives (SR) dialogue for resolving border issues.

The SCO Defence Ministers’ meet, hosted by China as the current chair, is expected to focus on evolving regional security dynamics, especially in the wake of rising terror threats and geopolitical shifts.
