Cyclone Montha Heads Toward North Telangana

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert as the remnants of the severe cyclone Montha move dangerously toward North Telangana and the southern parts of Bastar. Although the system has weakened into a deep depression, it continues to pose a significant threat to the region, with predictions of heavy rainfall and gusty winds over the next two days.
According to the latest forecasts, Montha’s remnants, initially expected to dissipate over the east coast, have taken an unexpected northward turn. IMD data indicates that the system is showing signs of slight intensification as it interacts with prevailing local moisture conditions. The resulting atmospheric activity is likely to affect large parts of Telangana within 24 to 48 hours.
Districts along the Godavari River basin are expected to face the storm’s major impact. Stretching from Bhadrachalam in the east to Karimnagar in the northwest, the region will experience steady and sweeping winds ranging from 28 to 33 kilometres per hour. IMD experts have warned that while these winds may not reach cyclonic intensity, they could still uproot trees, damage power lines, and obstruct movement on already waterlogged roads.
Low-lying areas—particularly those still recovering from last week’s unseasonal rains—remain at high risk of waterlogging and flash floods. IMD models have predicted rainfall exceeding 100 mm in certain pockets, with continuous showers threatening to disrupt daily life and farming operations. The hardest-hit districts are likely to include Bhadrachalam, Khammam, Mulugu, Bhupalpally, Mahabubabad, and Peddapalli. These regions, dotted with dense forests, rural hamlets, and harvest-ready farmlands, could see significant damage if rain persists.
The Telangana State Disaster Response and Relief Department has mobilised rapid response teams across all vulnerable areas. Officials have urged residents to stay alert and avoid venturing into flood-prone zones during this period. The coming 48 hours will be crucial in determining the scale of Montha’s lasting impact on the state.
