A statue of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was unveiled at Indira Chowk near the railway station in Kamareddy town on Tuesday, January 20. Telangana government advisor and senior Congress leader Mohammed Ali Shabbir led the ceremony. Several senior leaders joined him, marking the occasion with tributes and speeches that recalled Indira Gandhi’s legacy and links with the region.

District in-charge minister D Seethakka, TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud, and Zaheerabad MP Suresh Kumar Shetkar attended the unveiling. The event drew party leaders and workers, who gathered to honour the former Prime Minister and reflect on her role in shaping national policies and welfare programmes.

Mohammed Ali Shabbir recalled Indira Gandhi’s close association with Kamareddy. He described the town as a Congress stronghold and said the unveiling of the statue was a proud moment. He praised her as a bold and visionary leader who stood for the poor. He referred to her decisions such as bank nationalisation and the launch of the Garibi Hatao campaign, saying these steps brought major change to the lives of the underprivileged. He also reaffirmed the Congress party’s commitment to the development of Kamareddy. He promised to deliver the welfare benefits of Indiramma Rajyam to every household. He later urged party workers to work like disciplined soldiers to realise her vision.

Meanwhile, minister Seethakka hailed Indira Gandhi as a symbol of courage and women’s empowerment. She said Indira Gandhi, as India’s first woman Prime Minister, upheld the dignity of women and inspired generations. She added that the present Telangana government is moving in the direction of Indiramma Rajyam. She pointed to schemes such as Indiramma Illu, which provides housing for the poor. She also described Indira Gandhi as the Iron Lady whose leadership continues to guide the nation.

TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud then spoke about Indira Gandhi’s sacrifice for national unity. He said her ideals remain central to the Congress party. He noted that her 20-point programme laid the foundation for several welfare initiatives that continue today. He expressed hope that the statue in Kamareddy would inspire party workers and strengthen the Congress base in the region.

Later, Zaheerabad MP Suresh Kumar Shetkar described Indira Gandhi as more than a political figure, calling her “a powerful force.” He said her foresight helped India achieve food security and self-reliance. He added that her welfare schemes left a lasting imprint across villages in the Zaheerabad parliamentary constituency. He pledged to continue public service in line with her ideals.
