Afghan Pakistan Tensions Escalate After Airstrikes
internet/Hyderabad, March 2 (Maxim News): Afghan Pakistan tensions escalated sharply after Afghanistan claimed it carried out airstrikes on key Pakistani military bases early Monday.
The Afghan Ministry of Defense said its air force targeted strategic installations in Pakistan in response to recent cross border attacks.
According to the statement, Afghan jets struck the Nur Khan Airbase near Rawalpindi. The base lies close to the Pakistan Army General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.
Afghan officials also said they targeted the 12 Corps headquarters in Quetta and several military facilities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
However, Afghan authorities stated that Pakistan recently conducted air raids inside Afghan territory. Therefore, they described the latest operation as retaliation for those strikes. They claimed their attacks caused severe damage to Nur Khan Airbase and other installations.
Afghan Pakistan Tensions Trigger Cross Border Military Action
Meanwhile, Taliban officials in eastern Afghanistan announced that they shot down a Pakistani fighter jet over Jalalabad. They said security forces detained the pilot. However, Pakistan has not yet issued an official response to these claims.
Notably, Nur Khan Airbase had already suffered damage during Operation Sindoor. India reportedly targeted the facility in earlier hostilities. Pakistan has continued repair work at the base since then. Now, Afghan forces have again struck the same installation, which may increase pressure on Pakistan’s military infrastructure.
As tensions rise, security analysts warn that the situation along the Afghan Pakistan border remains volatile. Both countries share a long and sensitive frontier known as the Durand Line. The region often witnesses clashes, airspace violations, and cross border shelling.
In recent months, Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of harboring militant groups. In contrast, the Taliban administration has denied these allegations and blamed Islamabad for aerial incursions. Consequently, repeated exchanges have deepened mistrust between the two neighbors.
If confirmed, the latest strikes mark one of the most serious escalations in Afghan Pakistan tensions in recent years. Regional observers are closely monitoring developments, as further military action could destabilize the broader South Asian region. (Maxim News)
