Hyderabad, Oct. 10: BJP MP and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said India is not a “banana republic” and will be governed through Parliament, not the streets. He criticised opposition parties and the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) following protests at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
Prasad made the remarks on Saturday after police detained several opposition leaders who attempted to join a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Delhi Police had denied permission for the demonstration.
Those reportedly detained included former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, along with CJP leaders.
Prasad Comments on Democracy and Recent Bypoll Results
Addressing a press conference, Prasad said India had not bowed under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and would not do so in the future.
He said events over the preceding three days showed that Indian democracy had resisted attempts to create anarchy. He reiterated that the country would be governed through Parliament rather than street protests.
Prasad also cited the BJP led National Democratic Alliance’s bypoll victories in Assam, West Bengal and Puducherry on Friday to support his remarks.
