Hyderabad: The father of 18-year-old Narayandasu Sona broke down in grief after his daughter died in an accident during a Dandiya event at MVSR Engineering College in Nadergul.
Sona, a first-year B.Tech student, died after a decorative lighting structure collapsed during the college’s celebrations on Saturday evening. Her sister, Meena, was also injured and was initially reported to be in critical condition. Several other students sustained injuries.
“I thought I would take my two children to the village today. But I am taking my daughter’s body,” her father said, struggling to contain his grief.
He said he had expected his elder daughter to return home for the festival. Instead, the family is preparing to take her body home, while her younger sister remains under treatment.
Sona’s Father Alleges Negligence in College Event Arrangements
Sona’s father alleged that the college management failed to make adequate arrangements for an event of that scale. He blamed the alleged negligence for the tragedy and said the family had received little concern from the management following his daughter’s death.
He said both sisters had joined the college only a month ago. The family had hoped they could study together, even if the younger daughter secured a seat elsewhere.
The accident occurred during Dandiya celebrations at MVSR Engineering College in Nadergul, on Hyderabad’s outskirts. A large structure fitted with decorative lights collapsed onto students gathered for the event.
Police said the incident occurred around 7.30 pm. Initial reports indicated that strong winds may have caused the structure to fall. One student died, while several others were injured and shifted to hospitals for treatment.
The exact circumstances surrounding the collapse are under investigation. Allegations of negligence against the college management have not yet been established as official findings.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed grief over Sona’s death and directed officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured. He also called for action against those found responsible.
The tragedy has raised questions about safety arrangements for large events held on educational campuses.
