Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has issued a contempt notice to Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar over an allegation that its earlier directions to inquire into a custodial harassment complaint were not followed.
Justice T Madhavi Devi issued the notice under Sections 10 to 12 of the Contempt of Courts Act and directed Sajjanar to file his response. The court adjourned the matter for four weeks.
The contempt petition was filed by Md Shanawaz Alam, who had earlier approached the High Court alleging that he was subjected to physical harassment while in police custody.
Court Had Ordered CCTV Verification
According to Alam’s petition, the alleged incident took place on August 6, 2026. He alleged that police personnel beat him and threw chilli powder into his eyes despite there being no criminal case against him at the time.
Alam subsequently submitted a representation to the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mirchowk Division. He later sent a written complaint to the Director General of Police by registered post, alleging that no action had been taken against the police officials concerned.
The matter came before the High Court in a writ petition. On August 13, the court directed the Hyderabad Police Commissioner to examine Alam’s complaint and verify CCTV footage from the police station concerned. The court further directed that appropriate action be taken against the officials if the allegations were found to be true.
During the earlier proceedings, the government pleader for Home told the court that cross-complaints had been filed by Alam and Md Aslam Khan, who had lodged a case against the petitioner.
The government also submitted that Crime No. 110/2026 had been registered against Alam and that his complaint was under inquiry. The allegations of physical torture were denied.
Alam later approached the High Court again, alleging that the August 13 directions had not been complied with. The court has now sought Sajjanar’s response through the contempt proceedings.
The latest proceedings concern alleged non-compliance with the court’s earlier direction. The allegations of custodial harassment themselves remain disputed and have not been established by a final judicial finding.
