2 Lakh Chickens to Be Culled as Bird Flu Hits Nalgonda
Nalgonda/Hyderabad, March 23 (Maxim News): A major bird flu outbreak has been reported in Apur, Chityala mandal, Nalgonda district after the deadly virus was detected at a large poultry farm housing over 2,00,000 egg-laying hens. The outbreak came to light on Saturday following the unexplained deaths of hundreds of chickens over the past four days.
Veterinary officials inspected the farm and sent samples for lab testing, confirming bird flu. In response, the Urumadla Animal Husbandry Centre recommended the immediate culling of all remaining chickens to prevent further spread. However, the farm management initially delayed the process. Eventually, under the supervision of Dr. Ramesh, Joint Director of the Animal Husbandry Department, officials ensured the proper disposal of the infected birds while strictly following biosecurity measures. The farm has now been declared a bird flu-affected zone, extending up to a 3 km radius.
Around 40 workers were employed at the farm, and immediate health check-ups were conducted under the supervision of Dr. U. Narasimha from the Veliminedu PHC. Fortunately, no symptoms of infection were found among the workers, and their health remains stable.
Telangana on High Alert, 24 Checkposts Set Up
The Telangana government has placed the state on high alert, setting up 24 checkposts to monitor poultry movement. However, concerns have been raised over the lack of timely information from the veterinary department. Although officials confirmed the outbreak on March 19, they reportedly kept it confidential, failing to inform residents of nearby villages. Four villages within the affected zone remained unaware, raising questions about public safety management.
Authorities have now intensified sanitation efforts, destroyed contaminated poultry feed, and implemented strict monitoring measures within the affected zone to prevent further spread. (Maxim News)
