400 Senior Citizens In Age Bracket Of 55 And 100 Years To participate in 13 Athletics on December 8 in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Four hundred Senior Citizens in the age bracket of 55 to 95 years compete in an inspirational sports tournament in the city. It is called the 6th National Senior Citizens Open Championship.

It will be held both for men and women above 55 years and up to any upper age.  400 senior citizens from seven states in India to come to Hyderabad for the championship.  It will be at a ground behind RTC Hospital, Osmania University, Tarnaka in Secunderabad.

According to Mr MRP Babu, 75 years 75-year-old sprinter, it has been organised for the past six years by the Healthy Senior Citizens Sports Association.  The competition will be held in different age categories 100 meters run, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800, 1500, and 3000 meters.  There will be a walk for 3 km.  The other competitions include the Long Jump and Triple Jump.  There will be throws such as Discuss, Shot-put, Javelin, and Hammer.

The objective behind this championship is to sensitize senior citizens to the importance of an active lifestyle after 55 years.  Age is just a number.  It is not for the body.  Retirement doesn’t mean staying indoors and taking a rest.  The elders must lead an active lifestyle to avoid any lifestyle diseases, he added

The entire tournament which will be held in 13 athletic events will be held full day on 8th December.  It will be very inspirational.

We raised part of the funds required to host the tournament.  The balance amount will be borne by me and our 85-year-old president Mr. RP Bhaghavan.

According to WHO in 2050, 80% of older people will be living in low- and middle-income countries.  Keeping fit keeps the doctor away.  Every senior citizen must realize this fact and live accordingly, he said.
