Bengal Bandh Today: What’s Open, What’s Closed, and Key Timings
Bengal Bandh Today | The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a Bengal bandh on Wednesday, August 28, following clashes between protesters and Kolkata Police during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan‘ rally on August 27.
Background: The Nabanna Abhijan Protest
The ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ march, organized to demand Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee‘s resignation over her handling of a case involving the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, turned violent as protesters clashed with the police. The situation escalated when demonstrators overturned barricades, prompting police to respond with lathi charges, water cannons, and tear gas.
The ruling Trinamool Congress accused the BJP of instigating violence, while BJP National President JP Nadda criticized the police’s actions, calling them an assault on democratic principles.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Nadda said, “The images of police highhandedness from Kolkata have angered every person who values democratic principles. In Didi’s West Bengal, to help rapists and criminals is valued but it’s a crime to speak for women’s safety.”

In response to the incident, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar announced a 12-hour Bengal bandh, set to begin at 6 AM on Wednesday, August 28. Majumdar condemned the police’s actions during the protest and demanded the release of students who had been detained.
“The police and Mamata Banerjee have unleashed violence on the student agitation. They have lathi-charged, used tear gas, and water cannons on the democratic, peaceful protest… Our demand is simple: the students who have been arrested by the police should be released,” Majumdar stated.
What’s Open and What’s Closed
Schools, Colleges, Government Offices, and Banks: These are expected to remain open but may experience disruptions due to the band’s impact on traffic.
Essential Services: Medical care, drinking water, public transport, rail services, and electricity are expected to operate as usual.
Markets: The BJP has urged business organizations to keep markets closed. However, the West Bengal government has assured that normalcy will be maintained and that there will be no official closures due to the strike.
The West Bengal government has also stated that the administration will take steps to ensure that the bandh does not significantly affect the public.
