“Social, Cultural & Gender Context of 21st Century and Women’s Urdu Literature”

Hyderabad: “The 21st century has been a great shift in the way we talk about gender, culture, and social justice and Urdu literature has become a powerful space for women to express their perspective.

Today women are not only making a mark in literature but also influencing how to view issues like gender equality and culture changes”. These views were expressed by Ms. Shaik Yasmeen Basha, IAS, Director, Minorities WElfare, Govt. of Telangana. in the inaugural session of two-day national conference “Social, Cultural & Gender Context of 21st Century and Women’s Urdu Literature”.

The conference was organized by the Department of Women Education, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) in collaboration with Bainul Aqwami Nisai Adabi Tanzeem (BANAT), New Delhi on the occasion of ‘BANAT’ 8th Foundation Day.

Prof. Syed Ainul Hasan, Vice Chancellor, MANUU presided over the inaugural and Prof. Aslam Jamshedpuri, Head, Department of Urdu, Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut was the Guest of Honour. Prof. Sarwat Khan, Visiting Professor, Janardan Rai Nagar Vidyapeeth, Udaipur delivered the keynote address.

Speaking as the chief guest, Ms. Yasmeen Basha advised women to tell their story so that it will be a beacon for future generations and in the light of this women can show their position better in the future.

Prof. Ainul Hasan in his presidential address said even educated women have complaints about restrictions imposed on them in their homes. He advised women not to hide their point of view and to express it whenever they get a chance.

Prof. Sarwat Khan said that all religions and literature recognize the greatness of women. Women writers today are working at par with male writers and prove their equal status by participating in major events. She wished that women should not lag behind men in any way, be it literature or life.

Prof. Aslam Jamshedpuri also spoke on the occasion. Dr. Nigar Azeem, President, BANAT, Delhi detailed about the organization and Ms. Azra Naqvi presented poetry on women. Prof. Shahida, Dean, School of Arts & Social Science delivered welcome address and Prof. Ameena Tahseen, Convenor of the Conference & Head, DWE convened the programme.

Books published by Banat were released during the inaugural session.
