Indian Railways, which has the largest railway network in the world, will soon start a pilot project for the first hydrogen train as part of India’s goal of becoming a net zero carbon emitter by 2030.
Hydrogen fuel cells react chemically with oxygen to convert hydrogen gas into electricity. The train runs on this electricity. Only water and steam are released as by-products. The train needs about 40 thousand liters of water per hour for the necessary processes. The train has special arrangements for storing water. Once the fuel tank is filled, it travels 100 km. This hydrogen train travels at a maximum speed of 140 km per hour. Its noise is also very low. For this, the Railway Department will focus on the installation of hydrogen fuel cells and other facilities. Each train will cost approximately Rs. 80 crores. There is no harm to the environment with this hydrogen train as it runs on water instead of diesel and electricity. (Maxim News)
