Dalit Groom Riding Horse Faces Opposition: Police Step in for Protection
In Lavera village of Srinagar block, Ajmer district, a wedding procession proceeded peacefully on January 21 under heavy police protection. Around 400 police personnel were deployed to prevent potential opposition from upper-caste locals, who reportedly objected to the groom riding a horse—an act traditionally viewed as a symbol of status and equality.

The wedding involved Aruna, daughter of Narayan Khoswal, and Lokesh, son of Mohan Bakoliya, both residents of Srinagar. Fearing backlash from certain sections of the village, the bride’s family filed a formal request for police protection to ensure the safety of the procession.
The police acted promptly, providing extensive security. Senior officials confirmed that the arrangements were precautionary and that no incidents of disruption occurred. “Nothing happened and the security was simply for safety measures; there was no discrimination or any such incidents reported.” stated a senior officer involved in the operation.

Narayan Khoswal, the bride’s father, expressed his concerns about the societal challenges faced by his community. “There was fear in our community, and, therefore, we requested police for security. Nowadays, youth are educated and they oppose such discrimination” he said.
The incident underscores the lingering caste-related tensions in rural India, where traditional customs, such as a groom riding a horse, can sometimes provoke opposition from upper-caste groups. While such events highlight the deep-rooted challenges of caste hierarchies, they also reflect growing awareness and resistance to discriminatory practices.
Thanks to the proactive involvement of law enforcement, the wedding procession in Lavera village concluded peacefully, setting an example of how timely intervention can ensure harmony in culturally sensitive situations.
