Death Penalty To Rape Accused: Governor
Chennai/Hyderabad, Jan 24 (Maxim News): Governor of Tamil Nadu RN Ravi has approved the Act Amendment Bill passed by the State government in the Legislative Assembly on the 10th of this month for the crimes related to sexual harassment, rape and attempted rape against women and girls.

It is noteworthy that this bill was approved, setting aside about ten bills that were passed and sent in the Legislative Assembly before this bill. The state government has formulated this bill with amendments related to two laws implemented by the Central government.
Chief Minister Stalin, who also handled the Home Ministry, introduced a draft law in the Legislative Assembly on the 10th of this month, amending the Indian Penal Code (BNS) and Indian Civi Security Code (BNSS) Acts, which were brought into force by the Central Government in 2023 to prevent rape, attempted rapre, and gang rape of women and girls, in accordance with the needs of the state.
It is known that this draft law was unanimously passed in the Legislative Assembly and sent for the Governor’s approval. In this context, a statement was issued from the Raj Bhavan that the Governor has approved this draft law. According to this new law, the death penalty will be imposed for rape of girls, young women and women, and life imprisonment or death penalty for sexual abuse of girls under the age of 12. Life imprisonment or death penalty will be imposed for gang rape of girls under the age of 18.

Disclosing the details of women victims in rape cases will result in three to five years in prison, and making derogatory comments against women will result in three to five years in rigorous imprisonment. In cases like acid attacks, there will be a ten-year prison sentence. The state government has announced that this new law will come into effect across the state from Thursday itself, with the approval of the Governor. (Maxim News)
