Medaram Jatara 2026 Dates Announced: Telangana’s Largest Tribal Festival from January 28 to 31
Mulugu/Hyderabad, July 2 (Maxim News): The dates for the Medaram Sammakka Saralamma Vanadevatalu Maha Jatara 2026, one of the largest tribal festivals in the world and a cultural symbol of Telangana, have been officially finalized by Koya priests. The grand fair will be held from January 28 to 31, 2026 in Tadwai Mandal, Mulugu district.
This four-day tribal festival, often referred to as the Telangana Kumbh Mela, draws millions of devotees from across Telugu states and other parts of India, who come to pay their respects to the revered forest deities — Sammakka, Saralamma, Govinda Raju, and Pagididda Raju.
Medaram Jatara 2026 Schedule:
- January 28 (Wednesday) – The festivities will begin in the evening with the arrival of Saralamma, Govinda Raju, and Pagididda Raju from Kannepalli to the sacred altar (gadde).
- January 29 (Thursday) – At 6 PM, Sammakka Devi will be brought from Chilakala Gutta to join the divine gathering.
- January 30 (Friday) – Devotees will offer prayers and perform rituals in honor of the forest goddesses.
- January 31 (Saturday) – The festival will conclude at 6 PM with the return of the deities to the forest, marking the end of the spiritual congregation.
A Call for Preparations
The Koya tribal priests have requested the Telangana Congress government to begin preparations well in advance to ensure smooth arrangements for the expected large influx of devotees. In the previous edition, the festival witnessed attendance in the range of 10 to 15 million, putting pressure on local infrastructure, transport, sanitation, and health services.
A Legacy of Faith and Culture
Held every two years, the Medaram Jatara is not just a religious event — it’s a celebration of tribal heritage, resistance, and faith. The legend of Sammakka and Saralamma, two tribal women who sacrificed their lives fighting oppression, continues to inspire generations.
This sacred gathering holds immense spiritual significance and is celebrated with rituals, offerings of jaggery, and mass participation, highlighting the deep-rooted traditions of tribal Telangana.
