Karimnagar Village Bans Alcohol and Meat on Sundays, Declares Day as Holy

Karimnagar/Hyderabad, July 8, 2025 (Maxim News): In a unique social and spiritual initiative, residents of Garshakurthi village in Gangadhara mandal of Karimnagar district have come together to enforce a ban on alcohol and meat consumption every Sunday, declaring the day as sacred and dedicated to the Sun God.

Traditionally, Sundays are meat-consumption days in many rural and urban households, with people flocking to local mutton and chicken shops. However, Garshakurthi villagers have taken a collective decision to abstain from eating meat and drinking alcohol on Sundays in reverence to the day’s spiritual significance.

This move was inspired by lecturer Bhupathi Srinivas, who has been conducting daily discourses on the Mahabharata and Ramayana in the village since March 2. As part of his teachings, he explained the spiritual importance of Sunday, dedicated to Surya Bhagavan (Sun God), and emphasized that it should be observed as a day of purity and discipline.

Taking his message to heart, the villagers convened and unanimously decided to observe Sunday as a day of abstinence. Awareness campaigns were conducted, reaching every household, and notice boards were installed across village squares proclaiming the ban.

“No one in the village touches alcohol or meat on Sundays now. It’s not a legal ban, but a social commitment to values,” said a local resident.

The initiative has not only reduced alcohol consumption but also fostered a sense of spiritual awareness and community harmony. The villagers believe such steps will inspire neighboring communities to adopt similar values for personal and social well-being.
