Will Congress win the GHMC elections?

Hyderabad, July 29 (Maxim News):  The ruling Congress has focused on the Greater Hyderabad Corporation elections. This time, the Congress seems determined to win at any cost and bring back the glory of the past in Greater Hyderabad. In that context, the Congress is forming new committees related to Greater Hyderabad and holding a series of meetings with GHMC leaders, and is planning to start exercises to strengthen the party and activate the cadre. CM Revanth Reddy is making moves to hoist the Congress flag in the upcoming GHMC elections. In this context, Hyderabad in-charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar is conducting review meetings constituency-wise. Along with this, Hyderabad district party organizational in-charge Working President Jagga Reddy is also conducting reviews constituency-wise and finding out the problems and difficulties faced by the leaders in the respective constituencies.

In addition to trying to resolve them, Jagga Reddy also submitted a report with appropriate suggestions to PCC Chief Mahesh Kumar Goud and party affairs in charge Meenakshi Natarajan.

When the Congress was in the united Andhra Pradesh, it was strong in the GHMC area. Especially when late Rajasekhar Reddy was the Chief Minister, from 2004 to 2009, the Congress emerged as an unstoppable force in Greater Hyderabad City. At that time, out of a total of 14 MLA seats in Hyderabad, the Congress party won four, while its allies, TDP and BJP, TRS, won 6 seats and AIMIM won 4 seats. Since the Congress was in power at that time, it won the GHMC Mayor’s seat. It shared the Baldia seat with its ally, the AIMIM.

After the bifurcation of the state, the Congress party in the greater area was completely weakened. The death of P. Janardhan Reddy and Mukesh Goud, who were strong leaders in Hyderabad city, became a big minus. After that, former minister Danam Nagender joined the Gulabi party. Another former minister from the city, Marri Shashidhar Reddy, joined the BJP. With this, the Congress party in the greater area was completely weakened. In the assembly elections held in 2014 and 2018, the Congress did not win a single seat out of the 15 assembly seats in Hyderabad city.

Congress failed to achieve better results in Rangareddy district The same scene was repeated in Hyderabad district in 2023. The Congress, which could not open its account in Greater Hyderabad in the general elections, only won the Secunderabad Cantonment Assembly seat in the by-elections. In Rangareddy district, the Congress did not achieve better results in the 2014, 2018, and 2023 assembly elections. 

The term of the current Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Council will end in December 2025. With this, the Congress party hopes to win the GHMC mayor’s seat this time. The BRS GHMC mayor and deputy mayor have already resigned and joined the Congress. Some corporators from other parties have joined the Congress party.

BRS MLAs from the greater area have been inducted into the Congress party. Patancheru, Rajendranagar, and Khairatabad MLAs have resigned from the BRS and joined hands. Former minister and BRS MLA Danam Nagender, who won as a BRS MLA from Khairatabad, contested as a Congress candidate from Secunderabad Lok Sabha and lost. The ruling Congress party is reportedly planning to induct some more MLAs from the BRS party into the party by the time of the greater elections.

Keeping the GHMC elections in mind, CM Revanth Reddy has focused on greater development. Illegal structures are already being removed in the city under the name Hydra. CM Revanth Reddy has already announced that another city will be established next to Hyderabad under the name Fourth City. The expansion of the metro to the suburbs of Hyderabad has also been initiated. Regional ring road construction work is also underway. Programs like flyovers, roads and canal development are being carried out in Hyderabad city.

Congress is planning to experiment in the name of reviving the Musi River. With this, CM Revanth Reddy is preparing a sketch so that people will lean towards the Hastam party in the Greater elections.
