According to officials, the inflow into the reservoir has reached 1.76 lakh cusecs, while 2.56 lakh cusecs of water is being discharged downstream into the Krishna River. The current water level stands at 585.10 feet, closely approaching the full reservoir level (FRL) of 590 feet.

The reservoir’s storage capacity is 312 TMC (thousand million cubic feet), and it currently holds 297.72 TMC of water. With nearly 95% capacity filled, the water body is playing a critical role in irrigation, drinking water supply, and hydroelectric generation across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Visual Spectacle Attracts Tourists

The dramatic release of water through 26 open gates has created a breathtaking visual spectacle. Thousands of tourists and locals have gathered at the site over the past two days, capturing the majestic flow of water through videos and selfies.

Authorities have stepped up safety measures, including barricades, crowd control, and traffic diversions, to manage the surge in footfall. Visitors have been urged to maintain caution and avoid restricted zones near the spillway.

Significance of Nagarjunasagar Reservoir

One of the largest masonry dams in the world, Nagarjunasagar is a key lifeline for irrigation and drinking water across Telangana. It also helps regulate floodwaters from the Krishna River, especially during the monsoon season.

The dam’s operations are critical not just for flood control but also for replenishing reservoirs downstream, ensuring hydrological balance in the region.

Authorities Monitoring the Situation Closely

With the monsoon continuing to remain active in the Western Ghats and upper Krishna basin, irrigation officials are monitoring inflows and outflows around the clock. Any further increase in upstream water levels may lead to the opening of more gates in the coming days.
