lEH/Hyderabad, Sept 24 (Maxim News) Large-scale protests are taking place in Leh city demanding statehood for the Union Territory of Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The situation turned tense as the police tried to stop the protesters.
When the police lathicharged the protesters, the protesters turned on them. They chased them away by throwing stones. In this sequence, the protesters also set fire to the BJP office in Leh. The situation there became even more tense. The BJP office, which was set on fire by the protesters,
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP at the Centre. He lashed out at the Centre for not granting statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. He alleged that the BJP had lost power in Jammu and Kashmir and that is why it was not granted statehood. He said that delaying the granting of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir was an injustice to the people there.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Omar Abdullah said, “The people of Jammu and Kashmir participated in the election process. It is their misfortune that the BJP did not win the elections. However, the people here should not be punished for that. If we look at it, it seems that the BJP could not win the elections, so it is not possible to give statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. This is unfair to the people. It is not right to think that statehood will be given only if the results are in the BJP’s favor. The opposition to statehood for Jammu and Kashmir is coming from the BJP itself.”
Omar Abdullah alleged that the Centre had told the Supreme Court that it would implement the ‘three-step formula’ of delimitation, elections and statehood for granting statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, but now that the three steps have been completed, statehood has not been granted. He commented that the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir is the biggest challenge. (Maxim News)
