Do Not Give Cough Syrup To Children Under Two Years Of Age: Central Govt Warns

Delhi/Hyderabad, Oct 4 (Maxim News): The Union health Ministry has recently issued a statement saying that it is better not to use cough medicine for children until a thorough investigation into the deaths of children is conducted and the real cause is known. It has been advised not to use cough medicine for children under the age of two. nine children died of kidney failure within a span of fifteen days in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh. It was spread that the cause of kidney failure was the cough medicine given to the children.

In Sikar district of Rajasthan, two children died of organ failure a few days ago. There was a campaign that cough medicine was the reason for the deaths of children in these two states. Due to this, parents who give cough medicine to their children are in a state of panic.

It is known that five of the nine children who died in Madhya Pradesh used the cough medicine Coldref and one used Nexiro syrup. due to this, batches of dextromethorphan hydrobromide syrup were urgently tested.

The Union Health Ministry has already clarified that the test results have confirmed that these syrups used as cough medicines do not contain diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG) chemicals that can cause kidney failure.

These results have also been confirmed by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and the Madhya Pradesh State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA). However, the sale of some cough medicines has been stopped in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Currently, medical authorities are closely monitoring 1,420 children suffering from cold, fever and flu-like symptoms. (Maxim News)
