BC Reservation Hearing Telangana Today: All Eyes on High Court Verdict

BC Reservation Hearing Telangana | Hyderabad, Oct 8: The much-awaited decision on the Backward Classes (BC) reservation issue in Telangana is expected today, as the High Court resumes hearing on the case related to 42% reservation in local body elections.

Political leaders, officials, and BC associations are eagerly awaiting the verdict that could determine whether elections proceed as scheduled or face postponement.

The BC Welfare Department had issued GO No. 9 granting 42% reservation to BCs, followed by Panchayat Raj GOs 41 and 42.

However, Reddy Jagruti leader Buttangari Madhav Reddy challenged the move, arguing it violates the Supreme Court’s 50% cap on reservations.

The High Court will hear the matter today before a bench led by Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh.

Around 25 BC leaders, including MP R. Krishnaiah, MLC Mallanna, former MP V. Hanumantha Rao, and government whip Adi Srinivas, and others have filed supporting petitions urging the court to uphold reservations based on BC population data.

Government’s proactive legal strategy:

The Revanth Reddy government has been preparing its case meticulously for over a year. On Monday, Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka and ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Vakiti Srihari met legal experts in Delhi. Senior advocates Abhishek Singhvi and Siddhartha Dave represented Telangana in the Supreme Court.

CM Revanth Reddy has personally requested Singhvi to argue in the High Court today.

Later on Tuesday, CM Revanth Reddy chaired a high-level meeting with senior Congress leaders and ministers to finalize arguments.

The government plans to stress that 42% reservation was determined using empirical caste census data and supported by the triple test and dedicated commission as directed by the Supreme Court.

BC Reservation Hearing Telangana | Congress leaders’ meeting at Srihari’s residence

Meanwhile, state Congress leaders and BC representatives gathered at Minister Vakiti Srihari’s residence to coordinate strategy. The meeting, attended by PCC chief Mahesh Kumar Goud, ministers Konda Surekha and Ponnam Prabhakar, MPs, MLAs, and GHMC Mayor Vijayalakshmi, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving 42% BC reservation.

Leaders criticized the BJP for delaying the related bills pending with the President for over six months, asserting that the Congress would continue its efforts until the 42% quota goal is realized.
