BC Reservation: High Court Halts GO, Major Setback to Revanth Govt.
BC Reservation | Hyderabad, Oct. 9 (Maxim News): The Telangana government has faced a major setback regarding its local body election plans.
The High Court has issued an interim stay not only on GO No. 9, which mandates 42 percent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies, but also on the local election notification itself.

Following extensive hearings on the BC reservation issue, the court granted the state government four weeks to submit its counter-affidavit. The next hearing on the matter has been scheduled for two weeks from now.
Over the last two days, detailed arguments were presented before the High Court. Advocate General Sudarshan Reddy, representing the government, highlighted that the Assembly had passed a unanimous resolution to conduct a BC census.
He pointed out that Telangana had carried out a comprehensive caste survey for the first time since independence, through a house-to-house data collection, without encountering objections.
Sudarshan Reddy argued that, as per Supreme Court clarifications, courts should not intervene after a local body election notification is issued. He urged that the reservation provision was based on valid census data and legislative consensus, and therefore should be upheld. (Maxim News)
