- Panel seeks reasons for IndiGo flight disruptions
- Aviation regulator and airlines asked to explain cancellations
Hyderabad: Parliamentary panel is likely to summon top airline executives and the civil aviation regulator after large-scale IndiGo flight cancellations left thousands of travellers stranded across airports. The disruption continued for several days, and the panel plans to seek reasons for the cancellations and the rise in air fares during the crisis.
According to the input, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture, chaired by JD(U) leader Sanjay Jha, is expected to call senior officials from private airlines, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The committee will ask them to explain why air services were disrupted and what solutions can help prevent similar situations. A member of the panel said it has taken serious note of the difficulties faced by passengers.
Meanwhile, parliamentarians also faced trouble as they travelled to the national capital for the Winter Session. The member said they too were hit by IndiGo cancellations and delays by other airlines. Several MPs received complaints from people about rising air fares because of the ongoing situation. The problems continued even on Sunday.
CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member John Brittas, who is not part of the committee, demanded a joint parliamentary committee or a judicial inquiry into the large-scale disruption. He raised concerns about the scale of cancellations and their impact on people.
IndiGo cancelled more than 220 flights at Delhi and Mumbai airports on Sunday. The cancellations entered the sixth day, and efforts were underway to restore normal operations. On Saturday, the DGCA sent notices to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers and COO and Accountable Manager Porqueras. The regulator sought an explanation for the disruptions.
In a statement on Sunday, IndiGo said the Board of Interglobe Aviation has set up a Crisis Management Group. The group is meeting regularly to monitor the situation. The company said its Board of Directors is doing everything possible to support customers and ensure refunds to affected passengers.
