Congress lays siege to BJP offices over National Herald case

Hyderabad  Dec 18 (Maxim News)  : Congress cadres staged statewide protests on Tuesday following an All India Congress Committee call to lay siege to BJP offices over the National Herald case, leading to tense situations at several locations across Telangana.

The Congress alleged that the central government is misusing the Enforcement Directorate to harass senior leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

According to party leaders, the protest programme aimed to highlight what they described as political vendetta by the BJP government. As a result, Congress workers attempted to organise dharnas and rallies near BJP offices in Hyderabad and multiple districts. However, police intervened at many places, citing lack of permission, which escalated tensions.

In Hyderabad, Congress leaders and workers gathered in large numbers at Gandhi Bhavan in Nampally from early morning. They planned to march towards the BJP state office nearby and hold a protest.

Police stopped the rally and detained several senior leaders. Women Congress leaders, including Sunitha Rao, were taken into custody while attempting to move towards the BJP office. Heavy police deployment was seen at both Gandhi Bhavan and the BJP state office to prevent clashes.

Tension spreads across districts during Congress protest

The protest call triggered confrontations in several districts. In Karimnagar, Congress leaders attempted to lay siege to the office of Union Minister Bandi Sanjay.

In Sircilla, Congress workers reached the BJP office and staged a dharna, while BJP leaders also gathered in response. Police blocked BJP leaders from entering the office, leading to heated arguments with officers on duty.

In Sircilla and Karimnagar, Congress leaders led by Government Whip Adi Srinivas continued protests along the main highway. In Nalgonda, Congress cadres under the leadership of DCC president Punna Kailas laid siege to the BJP office.

The situation turned volatile when some Congress workers allegedly threw eggs at the BJP office. BJP workers present at the spot attempted to confront them, but police stepped in to prevent clashes.

Police later detained Congress leaders and dispersed the protesters to restore order. Similar tense scenes were reported from Warangal, where clashes involving Congress and BRS supporters created law and order concerns.

Several Congress MLAs participated in the protests in different districts and were arrested by the police.

The statewide protests underline the growing political confrontation between the Congress and BJP over the National Herald case, even as authorities maintain that law and order will be strictly enforced. (Maxim News )
