The victim was identified as Shivank Awasthi, a 20 year old Indian student. He was studying in his third year in the Department of Life Sciences at Scarborough University. According to available details, the shooting occurred on December 23 at the local Highland Creek Tail area in Toronto.
Police said a gunman opened fire at the location, leaving Shivank seriously injured. He died on the spot due to his injuries. Meanwhile, the attacker fled before police reached the scene. Authorities later confirmed that the assailant escaped after the shooting, and efforts were made to secure the area.
Following the incident, the university’s college campus was temporarily closed. Officials took this step as a precaution after the killing. The closure reflected the seriousness of the situation and the concern for student safety. Later, authorities said that with this incident, the total number of murders reported in Canada this year reached 41.
