Hyderabad police arrested a suspect within 24 hours in connection with the Puranapul temple vandalism that triggered violence and injuries to police personnel. The arrest followed a late night incident that led to unrest near the Puranapul Darwaza Temple and prompted a swift security response.
According to police, the incident occurred around 11.30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. The accused entered the Puranapul Darwaza gateway and damaged a flexi banner and a plaster of Paris idol placed in the temple verandah. However, police clarified that the suspect did not enter the sanctum sanctorum. They also confirmed that the main idol inside the temple remained untouched.
Soon after the damage came to light, tension rose in the area. Meanwhile, a mob of around 300 people gathered near the temple. The crowd vandalised a nearby religious structure. They also attacked police personnel deployed to control the situation. As a result, four police personnel suffered serious injuries during the violence.
The Kamatipura police registered a case soon after the vandalism. Then, officers launched a detailed investigation. They collected CCTV footage and other evidence from the scene. Based on technical inputs and leads gathered during the probe, police traced the suspect. Later, officers took him into custody on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
At the same time, senior police officers addressed rumours spreading on social media. They stated that claims about the destruction of the main idol were false. According to officials, such messages aimed to provoke unrest and mislead the public. Therefore, police urged citizens not to believe unverified information.
In addition, police registered a separate case over the mob attack and large scale vandalism. Investigators have identified several individuals involved in the violence using CCTV footage and video recordings. Officials said they would take stringent legal action against all those responsible.
Meanwhile, police confirmed that the situation in the Puranapul area is now fully under control. Security forces continue to maintain a presence in the locality.
Authorities have also appealed to residents to remain calm. They asked people not to spread rumours or share unverified content online. Police warned that strict action would follow against those who attempt to disturb public order.
