Rohith Vemula Act to Be Introduced in State: Bhatti
Hyderabad, Jan. 17 (Maxim News) : Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu on Saturday said the Rohith Vemula Act will be introduced in the state at the earliest. He made this statement after meeting members of the Justice for Rohith Vemula Campaign Committee at Praja Bhavan.
Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu said the government remains committed to bringing the Rohith Vemula Act. He recalled that Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi had written to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, urging the state to introduce the law. Therefore, he told the committee that the people’s government would work towards introducing the Rohith Vemula Act after discussions with the Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, members of the Justice for Rohith Vemula Campaign Committee submitted a draft of the Rohith Vemula Act to the Deputy Chief Minister. The committee prepared this draft in Karnataka. Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu acknowledged the submission and assured them that the government would study the proposal carefully.
During the meeting, committee members raised several demands. They sought a transparent inquiry into the Rohith Vemula case and justice for Rohith.
They also requested relief for 50 students and two teachers. According to the committee, authorities had registered non bailable cases against them in the university after Rohith Vemula’s death. The members urged the government to resolve these issues at the earliest.
In addition, the committee requested that Telangana introduce the Rohith Vemula Act on the lines of Karnataka. They said such a law would offer legal safeguards and prevent discrimination in educational institutions.
The Deputy Chief Minister listened to the representations and noted their concerns.
The meeting saw participation from members of the Karnataka delegation and representatives of the Justice for Rohith Vemula movement from Hyderabad.
Among them were senior Ambedkarite leaders, advocates, professors from the University of Hyderabad, and student representatives. Family members of Rohith Vemula also attended the meeting.
Officials said the discussions focused on policy, justice, and legal measures.
The government, meanwhile, reiterated its intent to engage with all stakeholders before moving forward. Further steps on the Rohith Vemula Act are expected after consultations at the highest level. (Maxim News)
