Hyderabad: The Hyderabad District Congress Committee will launch a three day MGNREGA Bachao Sangram Yatra from January 24 to January 26, 2026. The programme aims to oppose the dilution and renaming of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act by the BJP led NDA Government at the Centre. Therefore, the party plans to take its message directly to people across several Assembly constituencies in the city.

The yatra will be led by Hyderabad DCC President Syed Khalid Saifullah. According to the organisers, it will begin at 10 AM on January 24 at Charminar. It will then conclude on January 26 at the Malakpet TV Tower. Meanwhile, the yatra will cover three to four municipal divisions each day. These divisions fall under the Charminar, Bahadurpura, Yakutpura, Chandrayangutta, and Malakpet Assembly constituencies. The organisers said the route was planned to ensure wider public outreach.

MGNREGA Bachao Yatra to highlight Congress stand

Syed Khalid Saifullah said the MGNREGA Bachao Yatra would highlight the Congress party’s resistance to what it describes as the systematic dismantling of the constitutional Right to Work. He explained that the yatra would take the party’s message directly to the people. He said the goal was to expose how the Modi Government is weakening MGNREGA, which he described as a lifeline for India’s rural poor. Therefore, the party sees the yatra as both a protest and an awareness drive.

Meanwhile, Khalid Saifullah, along with Assembly in charges Rajesh Kumar from Bahadurpura, Boya Nagesh from Chandrayangutta, and Mujeebullah Shareef from Charminar, met TPCC President B Mahesh Kumar Goud at Gandhi Bhavan. They sought formal approval for the yatra and invited him to participate. Party leaders said Mahesh Kumar Goud is expected to join the programme.

Khalid Saifullah also referred to recent protests against the proposed changes to MGNREGA. He said these changes would strip rural families of their guaranteed right to employment. He further said they would rob workers of wage security, reduce the powers of Gram Panchayats, and shift financial responsibility to state governments. He accused the Centre of turning a legal entitlement into a political handout and converting MGNREGA into a contractor driven scheme.

Later, he warned that dilution of MGNREGA would lead to large scale migration from rural areas to urban centres like Hyderabad. He said such migration would add pressure to cities already facing an unemployment crisis. The Congress party, at both state and national levels, has vowed to continue its struggle until the Union Government withdraws what it calls anti poor amendments to the MGNREGA framework. Party leaders said the Hyderabad DCC yatra is part of a broader nationwide campaign to defend the rights of India’s rural workforce.
