A massive consumer awareness rally will be held in Hanamkonda on January 30, marking a key event in a national campaign aimed at consumer empowerment. The Southern States Consumer Coordination Committee chairman and Consumer Confederation of India national senior secretary, Dr Pallepadu Damodar, announced the programme while addressing a consumer awareness meeting in Hanamkonda. The meeting was organised by the District Consumer Advisory Committee on Wednesday and drew attention to the growing need for informed consumers.
Dr Damodar said the rally forms part of a national level consumer awareness campaign being carried out across the country. The campaign aims to educate people about their rights and responsibilities under the law. He explained that the effort focuses on empowering consumers by helping them understand how to deal with common problems in the marketplace. Therefore, the Hanamkonda rally is expected to play an important role in spreading awareness at the local level.
The Department of Consumer Affairs and the Consumer Confederation of India are conducting the campaign in collaboration with other concerned departments. The main objective is to raise awareness about the Consumer Protection Act 2019. The campaign also addresses issues such as fraudulent practices in weights and measures, adulteration of food products, and defects in paid services. Meanwhile, it explains how consumers can seek compensation through legal provisions when their rights are violated.
The national campaign began in New Delhi on December 24, which is observed as National Consumer Rights Day. It will continue across all States until March 14, 2026. Later, the campaign will conclude in New Delhi on March 15, marking World Consumer Rights Day, Damodar said. Throughout this period, various departments and organisations are actively participating to ensure wide outreach and impact.
Consumer associations, the Civil Supplies Department, the Weights and Measures Department, the Drug Control Department, municipal officials, and public organisations are taking part in the campaign. Their involvement aims to strengthen coordination and improve awareness among consumers.
Also, several senior office bearers of the Consumer Confederation of India are expected to join the Hanamkonda rally. These include CCI chairman Dr Ananth Sharma, president Preeti Pandya, working president Selvaraj, and general secretary S Chakrapani. Telangana State committee members Bheem Reddy, Shilpa Reddy, Supraj, and representatives from consumer associations of various States will also participate, he added.
