UPI services Malaysia will soon become available, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced during his visit to Malaysia. Speaking at an event on Sunday, Modi said the popular digital payment system used widely in India will expand to Malaysia. The announcement came as part of his ongoing visit to the country. However, he did not reveal when the services would start.
Modi said the move would benefit Indians living in Malaysia. He explained that UPI services Malaysia would work through a Virtual Payment Address, QR code, or mobile number. Therefore, users would not need to operate traditional bank accounts to make payments. He also said the system would use two factor authentication, ensuring secure transactions for users.
Meanwhile, Modi highlighted the rapid growth of UPI services in India. He said UPI is gaining strong momentum across the country. Statistics, as mentioned during the event, showed that 640 million transactions were made last year. Modi added that India’s UPI services now exceed the usage of Visa card services, which are used by most people worldwide. He also noted that more than half of the digital transactions taking place globally are happening in India. These figures underline why India is expanding UPI services Malaysia and to other countries.
During the same visit, Modi signed several key agreements with Malaysia. These agreements cover areas such as defence, trade, cooperation, and the supply of semiconductors. The discussions reflected growing ties between the two countries. Later, officials indicated that these agreements aim to strengthen long term cooperation in strategic sectors.
At the same time, there is a possibility that the issue of extradition of controversial religious leader Zakir Naik could come up. Zakir Naik, an Indian national, has been living in Malaysia for several years. Reports suggest that pressure may be raised regarding his extradition to India. However, no official statement was made on this matter during the event.
Overall, the announcement on UPI services Malaysia marked a key highlight of Modi’s visit. The move signals India’s effort to expand its digital payment ecosystem abroad.
