DME nursing promotions delay impacts Telangana colleges

Hyderabad, Feb. 9: The DME nursing promotions delay has triggered serious concerns at the Directorate of Medical Education office, where files related to staff promotions remain stalled for months.

The delay has drawn criticism as it affects nursing education and faculty availability across Telangana.

Officials allege that a few long serving staff members at the DME office are arbitrarily delaying files, especially those linked to promotions.

The issue has become contentious due to the government’s focus on strengthening nursing education. The state recently established 16 new nursing colleges, but students face difficulties due to faculty shortages.

To address the crisis, the Health Minister directed immediate promotions for staff nurses who completed MSc Nursing.

However, the DME nursing promotions delay continues, with officials accused of slowing the process despite repeated instructions from the minister’s office.

The preparation of the seniority list itself faced prolonged delays. Allegations surfaced that some section staff demanded bribes to process files.

Reports claimed that around Rs 10,000 was collected from each nursing officer through digital payments. After this, the seniority list was finally prepared.

Further allegations suggest that some paid up to Rs 2 lakh to halt promotion files. Complaints were earlier submitted to the DME office.

Last year, promotion files reportedly did not move beyond desks. Officials cited pending data from the Directorate of Health, while nursing officers allege excuses were used to stall eligible cases.

Faculty shortages have worsened the situation. Across government nursing colleges, 560 lecturer posts remain vacant.

After 93 lecturers were promoted as assistant professors, total vacancies rose to 653. Authorities deputed 84 MSc qualified nurses from government hospitals, yet shortages persist. Principals report difficulty in managing classes without minimum faculty strength.

DME Director A Narendra Kumar stated that promotions were delayed due to technical reasons. He confirmed that approvals were received from the Family Welfare Commissioner and said promotions would be processed immediately after the municipal election code ends.
