Ramadan 2026: Dates Flood Hyderabad Markets

Hyderabad: Ahead of Ramzan, which is set to begin this week, Hyderabad markets are flooded with dates from various Middle East countries. Traders across the city have stocked dozens of varieties. Although rates have increased in some cases, the hike is very nominal. In a few instances, prices have even declined.

Iran dates see sharp rise; Middle East varieties arrive

Local vendors said the rates of dates from Iran have increased significantly due to unrest in the country. Meanwhile, dates imported from Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Oman and other Middle East countries saw a slight increase in rates. However, the overall supply remains strong in the city markets.

In total, traders are offering 30–35 varieties of dates this season. These include Ajwa, Amber, Medjool, Mabroom, Sagai, Safawi, Sukkari, Rutab and Majboor. Therefore, buyers have a wide range of choices ahead of the holy month. Despite minor price changes, the availability of stock has kept the market active.

Demand for dates surges in Hyderabad markets

With only a few days left for Ramzan, demand for dates has surged across Hyderabad. People are purchasing them in retail markets and consuming them throughout the month. Traditionally, Muslims break their fast with dates. As a result, sales increase sharply during this period every year.

However, buyers have been advised to stay alert. Some traders in the city sell expired or leftover stock from the previous Ramzan. Since the date business is seasonal, many traders operate for only two months a year. Unsold stock is often stored without proper precautions. Later, damaged stock is repackaged and sold in the market.

Consumers can check for three clear signs before buying. They should look for discolouration or mould. They should also check the smell. Then, they can break open the date to see if worms are present. Therefore, careful inspection can help buyers avoid poor-quality products during the Ramzan season.
