Hyderabad: A devotee dies of cardiac arrest while trekking a hillock to have darshan of Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy at Velala village in Jaipur mandal on the occasion of the annual Maha Shivratri festival on Sunday. The incident occurred in Mancherial district and caused shock among fellow devotees.
Police identified the deceased as Bingi Rajender, aged 45, a resident of Naspur mandal headquarters. According to police, he collapsed after complaining of severe chest pain. He was trekking the hillock along with his family members to reach the Mallikarjuna Swamy temple located atop the hill. However, he suddenly fell ill during the climb.
Family members and others immediately shifted him to a hospital. However, doctors declared that he was brought dead. The devotee dies of cardiac arrest incident happened amid heavy footfall due to the Maha Shivratri festival. Devotees had gathered in large numbers to offer prayers.
Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy temple in Velala is a major abode of Lord Shiva in Mancherial district. Therefore, thousands of devotees from various parts of the district visit the shrine every year. Meanwhile, devotees from neighbouring Peddapalli district and Maharashtra also throng the temple. They offer special prayers on the occasion of Maha Shivratri.
The annual festival draws a large crowd as devotees trek the hillock to reach the temple. However, this year’s celebrations were marked by tragedy as the devotee dies of cardiac arrest while climbing the hill. Police confirmed the circumstances and said the incident occurred during the trek to the temple. The sudden death has cast a shadow over the festivities at the popular Shiva temple in Velala village.
