According to the United Geological Survey, the earthquake’s intensity was recorded at 6.1. The agency said the tremors spread across Indonesia after the quake hit waters close to Sumatra Island. Meanwhile, authorities did not confirm any casualties or property damage.

The Sumatra earthquake occurred in a region known for frequent seismic activity. Sumatra Island is prone to earthquakes due to the convergence of several tectonic plates. The area forms part of the Indo Pacific Ring of Fire, which is known for earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The Sumatra region lies along a major tectonic collision zone. This zone stretches for more than 8,000 km from Papua in the east to the Himalayan front in the west. The Sumatra Andaman section of this zone forms a subduction megathrust along the Sunda Java. It is here that the Indo Australian and Sunda plates meet. Therefore, seismic events occur often in this belt.

Meanwhile, Indonesia witnessed similar tremors in recent months. In November last year, an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck near Aceh province. The epicenter was located at a depth of about 10 kilometers. Earlier in September, another earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit central Papua province, the United Geological Survey reported.

The latest Sumatra earthquake again highlights the vulnerability of the region to tectonic activity. However, officials have not reported any immediate damage. Authorities continue to monitor the situation following the tremors.
