Iran Announces New Supreme Leader: Big Twist In The War
Tehran/internet/Hyderabad, Mar 9 (Maxim News): A key change has taken place in Iranian politics, which is at war with the United States and Israel. After the death of Iran’s new Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei , his son Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed as the next Supreme Leader.
On February 28, the 86-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a joint operation by the US and Israeli air forces in Tehran. His family members were also reportedly killed in these attacks. To fill the political vacuum created in the country, Iran’s Assembly of Experts held an emergency meeting and unanimously selected Mojtaba Khamenei as the Supreme Leader.
Born in Mashhad in 1969, Mojtaba Khamenei is the second son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He has never held any official positions in the government. However, he has played a key role behind the scenes in running his father’s office (Beit Rahbari) for the past two decades.
Mojtaba has close ties to Iran’s powerful military wing, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and has experience participating in the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.
Religious status: He received a clerical education and attained the rank of ‘Hujjat al-Islam’ (middle-ranking cleric). However, his lack of the ‘Ayatollah’ status required of the Supreme Leader is currently a matter of debate.
The 1979 Islamic Revolution ended the monarchy in Iran. Now, there are criticisms that a ‘hereditary regime’ has begun there by handing over power from father to son.
On the other hand, US President Donald Trump strongly opposed this appointment. “No new leader can last long without our approval,” Trump warned. With Mojtaba’s appointment, it is clear that Iran is going to continue its old hard-line policies. As the war with Israel and the US intensifies, the direction in which Mojtaba’s leadership will lead Iran is now arousing global interest. (Maxim News)
