Delhi/Hyderabad, April 3 (Maxim News): The Election Commission has ordered an NIA probe into the incident in which seven judicial officers who had come for a ‘sir’ examination in Malda, West Bengal were detained for nearly 9 hours by the NIA. The NIA team has started an investigation and has arrested 35 people, including the main mastermind of the incident, lawyer Mofakkarul Islam. Bengal police say that Islam was arrested while trying to flee at the Bagdogra airport.
Islam said that he had gone to help some people protesting against the removal of names from the voter list and did not lead the protests. “I was on my way from Kolkata to Alipurduar and gave a speech near the protest site. I did not participate in the main incident or stop the lawyers. The incident took place near Me Habari while I was on the National Highway. I was arrested at Bagdogra airport,” Islam said.
Anti-social forces attacked judicial officers at Kaliachak in Malda at 3.30 pm on Wednesday while they were going to Sir Parishil. They were detained for nine hours without drinking water and food. The situation became serious and the Supreme Court’s intervention was inevitable. Later, after the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court spoke to the West Bengal DGP, the police entered the scene. They lathi-charged and dispersed the rioters and released the judicial officers. A bench headed by CJI Justice Suryakant took suo motu cognizance of the incident and impeached the West Bengal administration. It ordered the Election Commission to submit a report on the investigation and to conduct an investigation by the CBI or NIA. It suggested that central forces be deployed in Bengal. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the incident. She accused the BJP of conspiring to discredit the state and impose President’s rule. (Maxim News)
