Sonia Gandhi Questions Centre On Timing Of Introduction Of 33 Percent Reservation Bill To Women

Delhi/Hyderabad, April 13 (Maxim News) Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has described the process of delimitation of constituencies undertaken to increase the number of seats in the Lok Sabha as an ‘attack on the Constitution’. Similarly, she questioned the Centre on the timing of the amendment to the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhaniyam’ (33 percent reservation to women). In an article published in a national newspaper on Monday, she criticized the Centre. She alleged that the Centre refused to hold an all-party meet on the delimitation process despite the opposition’s request. She said that this is evidence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘dominant tendency’.

Sonia Gandhi clarified that they are not opposed to the idea of reserving 33 percent seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, but only to the delimitation process that will take place before the 2027 census. She recalled that opposition leaders had written to the government three times, demanding an all-party meeting to discuss the government’s new proposals after the last phase of elections in West Bengal on April 29. She said that this very reasonable request was rejected. Sonia Gandhi warned that carrying out delimitation of constituencies based on unofficially available information is extremely dangerous.

Sonia Gandhi has urged the central government to bring a bill to amend the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ during the monsoon session instead of holding a special session of Parliament from April 16 to 18. Stating that the monsoon session of Parliament will begin in mid-July, Sonia said that polling will be completed in West Bengal on April 29 and that an all-party meeting will be held immediately after the polling is over, to discuss the constitutional amendment bills and take them up for consideration in the monsoon session.
