Dhanbad/Hyderabad, April 26 (Maxim News): Plastic waste is a big threat to the environment . In addition, at a time when the world is facing an energy crisis, Indian scientists have come up with innovative ideas. They have developed the technology to convert plastic waste into clean hydrogen fuel.
The researchers, led by Professor Ejaz Ahmed, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, have achieved this feat. They have developed a plasma reactor-based technology. This not only removes plastic waste, but also provides hydrogen fuel and other valuable by-products.
When plastic waste is processed using plasma reactor-based technology, carbon nanotubes are produced as by-products. These, which cost over Rs. 1 lakh per kg, are used in the manufacture of bulletproof jackets, electronic devices, and various composites. In this context, plasma reactor-based technology has become economically viable. Laboratory tests conducted by IIT Dhanbad scientists with this technology have been fruitful. Efforts are underway to obtain a patent for this. Fuel can also be produced from biomass such as crop waste with the same technology. (Maxim News)
