Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam created a major political impact in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The party won 108 seats out of 234 and emerged as the single largest party.

Although TVK fell short of the majority mark, Vijay secured support from the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML to form the government.

Along with Vijay, nine ministers also took oath. Prominent leaders in the cabinet include N. Anand, Aadhav Arjun and Sengottaiyan.

Political analysts described Vijay’s rise as a major shift in Tamil Nadu politics. For decades, Dravidian parties such as Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam dominated the state’s political landscape.

Many observers also compared Vijay’s political journey to former Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran, who successfully moved from cinema into politics.

Celebrations continued across Chennai after Vijay’s swearing in ceremony. TVK supporters gathered in large numbers and celebrated the party’s historic victory.
