Hyderabad, May 22: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy congratulated the medical team of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences for achieving a rare milestone in kidney transplantation after the institute successfully completed 2,000 kidney transplant surgeries.
The landmark achievement was accomplished through the Department of Urology at NIMS, making the institute the leading kidney transplant centre in South India.
According to officials, Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre currently holds the top national position in kidney transplantation, while Christian Medical College Ludhiana stands second. NIMS has now secured the third position in the country.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy appreciated the doctors, surgeons, nurses, technicians, and support staff for providing exceptional healthcare services and bringing recognition to Telangana in advanced medical treatment.
A major highlight of the achievement is that nearly 1,900 out of the 2,000 kidney transplant beneficiaries underwent surgeries free of cost through the Rajiv Aarogyasri Scheme and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
Officials said around 95 percent of the patients received life saving treatment without financial burden, reflecting the Telangana government’s commitment towards affordable and accessible healthcare for economically weaker sections.
Kidney transplant procedures in private hospitals generally cost several lakhs of rupees, making the free treatment provided at NIMS highly significant for poor and middle class families.
NIMS also created another major record by successfully completing 500 kidney transplants within just three years and four months since January 2023.
Medical experts said the rapid increase in transplant procedures reflects improved infrastructure, advanced surgical expertise, strong post operative care, and growing public trust in government healthcare institutions.
Doctors noted that NIMS has emerged as a major referral centre for kidney related treatments and organ transplantation not only for Telangana but also for neighbouring states.
Officials stated that the success of NIMS highlights Telangana’s growing reputation in super speciality healthcare and organ transplantation services.
The Department of Urology and Nephrology at NIMS has been continuously strengthening transplant systems through advanced medical technologies, specialised treatment protocols, and long term patient monitoring.
Doctors also stressed the importance of organ donation awareness, which has played a key role in increasing successful kidney transplant procedures.
The Telangana government has been focusing on expanding public healthcare infrastructure, improving medical education, and strengthening super speciality treatment facilities across the state.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed confidence that NIMS would continue setting new benchmarks in organ transplantation and advanced healthcare services in the coming years.
