Hyderabad, may 22: Unidentified bike borne assailants allegedly snatched a gold chain from an elderly woman in Bandlaguda village under Yacharam Police Station limits of Rangareddy district on Thursday.
The victim was identified as 72 year old Bagari Pochamma, who was reportedly sitting in front of her house when the incident took place.
According to police, two unidentified persons arrived on a Pulsar motorcycle and targeted the elderly woman. The accused allegedly abused her verbally before forcibly snatching the gold chain from her neck and fleeing from the spot.
Police register case and launch investigation
Following a complaint lodged by the victim and her family members, Yacharam police registered a case and initiated an investigation into the chain snatching incident.
Police teams have begun collecting information from local residents and nearby surveillance cameras to identify the accused and trace their movements after the robbery.
Officials suspect that the assailants may have conducted recce in the area before targeting the elderly woman.
The incident created panic among residents in the locality, especially senior citizens and women living in isolated areas.
Rising concern over chain snatching incidents
Locals expressed concern over increasing incidents of chain snatching and thefts involving bike borne offenders in suburban and rural areas surrounding Hyderabad.
Residents urged police to increase night patrolling and surveillance in vulnerable residential pockets to prevent such crimes.
Police advised elderly citizens and women to remain cautious while sitting alone outside houses and to immediately report suspicious movement of unidentified persons in the locality.
