Adilabad, May 28: Adilabad district police busted an interstate heavy vehicle theft gang and arrested three accused involved in stealing commercial vehicles across multiple states.
District Superintendent of Police Akhil Mahajan said police registered a case against ten persons in connection with the vehicle theft network.
The arrested accused were identified as Salim, Nafees Khan from Haryana and Imtaj Hussain alias Imtiyaz from Rajasthan.
Gang targeted heavy commercial vehicles
Addressing the media, SP Akhil Mahajan said the gang mainly targeted heavy vehicles such as Eicher trucks and tippers parked along highways and near petrol pumps.
Police said the accused used to break vehicle windows, damage steering locks and cut ignition wiring before stealing the trucks.
Investigators found that the stolen vehicles were quickly transported to Maharashtra and Gujarat, where they were dismantled into spare parts and sold within a day.
The SP said several criminal cases were already registered against the accused at Mavala, Gudihatnur and Shamshabad police stations.
Accused arrested during vehicle checking
Police arrested the three accused during a recent vehicle inspection drive near the Mavala bypass in Adilabad district.
Officials said the accused were travelling in a Toyota Etios car and tried to escape after police stopped them on suspicion. However, police teams chased and caught them.
Police seized one Toyota Etios car and three mobile phones from their possession.
The arrested accused were later produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
Special teams searching for absconding accused
SP Akhil Mahajan said special police teams were continuing efforts to trace and arrest the remaining absconding accused linked to the gang.
He appreciated the efforts of the Cyber Cell, Technical Team, Mavala Police, Adilabad Rural Police, CCS personnel and Madhya Pradesh Police officials who assisted in solving the case.
Certificates of appreciation were presented to the officers involved in the investigation.
DSP Jeevan Reddy, Circle Inspectors Prem Kumar and K Phanindar, Sub Inspectors Vishnuvardhan and Srikanth, along with other officials, attended the media conference.
