India Has Fuel Reserves For Up to 60 Days: Hardeep Singh Puri

New Delhi, June 8: Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday said India has sufficient reserves of crude oil, natural gas and LPG to meet domestic demand for 30 to 60 days, even if disruptions occur due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking at an event in New Delhi, the minister said the country has adequate fuel stocks and strategic plans in place to manage short term supply challenges.

Puri said India currently maintains reserves of crude oil, natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas that can support the country’s requirements for up to 60 days. He added that when strategic petroleum reserves are included, supplies could last even longer.

Referring to concerns over the situation in West Asia, the minister said the government has already prepared contingency plans to address possible disruptions in energy supply routes.

He noted that the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global energy corridor. However, India has explored alternative arrangements and maintains strong partnerships with key energy suppliers.

Puri expressed confidence that friendly nations, including the United Arab Emirates, could support India through alternative supply channels if required. He said LPG cargoes and other energy supplies could be redirected through suitable routes.

The minister cautioned that a prolonged conflict in West Asia could have wider consequences for the global economy. He said any escalation affecting major shipping routes would create challenges for international trade and energy markets. Despite global uncertainties, Puri assured that India remains well prepared to manage short term disruptions and safeguard domestic energy security.
