Telangana ministers LED screens spark spending debate

Telangana ministers LED screens | Hyderabad, June 29: The installation of high value LED screens in the conference halls of two senior Telangana ministers has triggered criticism, with questions being raised over government spending amid repeated claims of financial constraints.

According to sources in the Secretariat, the ministers insisted on installing LED screens similar to those in the Chief Minister’s Office conference hall. Officials reportedly approved the purchases after repeated instructions from the ministers.

The issue has sparked debate because the government has often cited financial limitations while delaying payments in several sectors. Critics have questioned the priority given to such expenditure.

After the new Secretariat became operational, the government equipped the sixth floor conference hall with a modern video conferencing system. The hall also received LED screens after officials noticed technical issues during a few early video conferences held by the present government.

Soon after, one senior minister reportedly visited the facility and expressed dissatisfaction with the video conferencing system in his own chamber. He then instructed officials to install LED screens similar to those in the Chief Minister’s conference hall.

Officials completed the installation within a week after receiving the directions.

Later, another senior minister attended a meeting in the upgraded conference hall. Impressed by the display quality, he also directed his staff to arrange similar LED screens for his conference hall.

Initially, General Administration Department officials reportedly expressed reservations because of the cost. However, the minister’s office later approached the department’s Head of Department officials.

The department eventually funded the installation from its own budget. Officials reportedly justified the decision by stating that the minister frequently conducts video conferences with district officers and required better display quality.

Industry experts estimate that each LED screen installation costs between Rs 45 lakh and Rs 50 lakh, depending on the specifications and integrated conferencing equipment.

The expenditure has drawn criticism because several retired government employees continue to await the release of their retirement benefits.

Critics argue that while payments remain pending in some sectors, funds for ministerial infrastructure appear to receive quicker approval.
