New Delhi, July 1: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) President Alok Kumar has supported the extension granted to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged Ram Temple donation theft case, saying there is nothing inappropriate about giving investigators an additional 15 days to complete a thorough inquiry.
Speaking to media on Wednesday, Kumar said the SIT should be allowed to complete its investigation without unnecessary interference if more time is required to reach a logical conclusion. He added that the probe should also recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
VHP rejects demand for CBI probe
Alok Kumar dismissed demands from some political parties for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry, describing such calls as unnecessary. He said the police are conducting the investigation efficiently and impartially and urged people to have faith in the country’s investigative agencies.
He argued that questioning the state police while simultaneously demanding a CBI investigation was contradictory, as both agencies function under governments led by the BJP. He added that the investigation is under constant public and media scrutiny and any lapses would eventually come to light.
Kumar also rejected the proposal to constitute an all-party committee to investigate the case, saying it would amount to handing over a criminal investigation to political leaders.
Responding to questions about the status of Gopal Rao as Ram Temple manager, Kumar said he was unaware whether Rao held any formal appointment.
He noted that Ram Temple General Secretary Champat Rai resigned soon after the FIR was registered to ensure the investigation was not influenced. Kumar said the decision should be appreciated as it removed concerns about possible interference with witnesses or evidence.
He also criticised politically motivated demands surrounding the case, saying parties were making allegations ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections rather than allowing the investigation to proceed objectively.
On reports that details of the investigation were being leaked to the media, Kumar questioned their authenticity, saying it was difficult to distinguish between verified information and politically motivated speculation.
