India Indonesia Sign BrahMos Missile Supply Agreement

Jakarta, July 7: India and Indonesia signed a landmark defence agreement for the supply of BrahMos missiles during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Jakarta on Tuesday. The deal marks a major boost for India’s defence exports and further strengthens strategic ties between the two countries.

Besides the BrahMos missile agreement, Indonesia will also procure India’s indigenously developed Astra beyond visual range air to air missiles. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the Astra missile is designed to engage highly manoeuvrable enemy aircraft. India is also expected to supply additional BrahMos missile batteries to the Indonesian military.

Furthermore, both countries signed a framework agreement to enhance maritime safety and security cooperation. The agreements were finalised during PM Modi’s visit, the first leg of his three nation tour.

“The growing trust between our countries is strengthening our defence, security and maritime cooperation. Today, we agreed to enhance defence exchanges, disaster management and industrial cooperation,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister also announced greater cooperation in the healthcare sector. He said the agreement would improve access to affordable Indian medicines in Indonesia while supporting the training of Indonesian doctors and healthcare professionals.

In addition, India and Indonesia signed an agreement on minerals and technologies to strengthen the steel supply chain and critical mineral cooperation. India is also expected to assist Indonesia in developing country specific Electronic Voting Machines, expanding cooperation in election technology.

Earlier in the day, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto conferred the Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia, the country’s highest civilian honour, on PM Modi in recognition of his contributions to strengthening bilateral relations.
