Karimnagar, July 22: Armed assailants allegedly looted 66 tolas of gold, ₹21 lakh in cash and 10 tolas of silver from a house in Bhagat Nagar in Karimnagar during the early hours of Tuesday, leaving four members of the family injured.
The incident comes less than two months after a major robbery at a jewellery showroom in the town.
According to police, the robbery took place shortly after midnight at the residence of Azmat Ali. After he switched off the lights on the ground floor and entered the house, a group of around eight unidentified men allegedly forced their way inside.
The assailants reportedly assaulted Azmat Ali before attacking his wife and two daughters. They allegedly threatened the family with firearms and knives, warning them not to raise an alarm.
Police said the robbers tied up the family members before fleeing with 66 tolas of gold, ₹21 lakh in cash and 10 tolas of silver. They also allegedly took away the victims’ mobile phones to prevent them from seeking immediate help.
Before escaping, the accused reportedly locked the family inside a room and fled on two motorcycles stolen from the house’s parking area.
Police teams reached the spot after receiving information and launched an investigation. CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being examined, and officials suspect the accused may have escaped through the Vemulawada bypass.
Azmat Ali has alleged that the robbery may have been carried out by people known to the family. He expressed suspicion about the possible involvement of his eldest son-in-law, claiming that the assailants spoke in a northern Hindi dialect and noting that his son-in-law is from Uttar Pradesh.
Police have not confirmed any suspect’s involvement and said the investigation is continuing from all possible angles.
