Surge In Sexual Offence Cases Revives Women’s Safety Concerns In Hyderabad

Hyderabad, July 26: A series of reported sexual offence cases over the past three weeks has renewed concerns over women’s safety in Hyderabad, with incidents involving women and children drawing attention to the need for stronger preventive measures and faster justice.

The recent cases have reignited discussions on safety in homes, workplaces, educational institutions and public spaces.

Women’s rights organisations and social activists have urged the Telangana government to ensure speedy investigation and trial of sexual offence cases. They have also sought stronger counselling, rehabilitation services and institutional support for survivors.

Hyderabad Police said efforts to prevent crimes against women have been intensified through SHE Teams, surveillance, special patrols and prompt action on complaints.

According to police officials, every complaint received by SHE Teams is acted upon immediately, with appropriate legal action initiated wherever required. Police have appealed to women facing harassment or abuse to report incidents without delay, assuring confidentiality and timely assistance.

Reported Sexual Offence Cases in July

Several cases reported in July have contributed to growing public concern:

• A woman police constable accused a sub-inspector of sexually assaulting her on the pretext of marriage. The officer was subsequently arrested.
• A former student alleged that a school principal had sexually assaulted her several years ago.
• A seven-year-old girl was rescued from an alleged sexual assault attempt in Borabanda after local residents overpowered the accused and handed him over to the police.
• Two men were arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a young woman after luring her with promises of opportunities in the film industry.
• A newly married woman alleged that her husband and his friends gang-raped her after forcing her to consume intoxicating substances. The National Commission for Women has sought a report from the Telangana government on the incident.

The recent incidents have intensified calls for stronger institutional safeguards, increased public awareness and more effective measures to prevent gender-based violence across the city.
