Internet, August 5: Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reportedly crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, becoming the second-fastest film to achieve the milestone after Avengers: Endgame, according to industry reports.
The report states that the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film has earned $1.052 billion worldwide, including $407 million in North America and $645.8 million from international markets.
Speaking to Deadline, Tom Rothman, Chairman of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, attributed the film’s success to its emotional core rather than spectacle.
“Whether you live in Peru, Pakistan, or Peoria, everyone wants friends and wants connection with everyone. Fundamentally this is a movie about friendship and hope,” Rothman was quoted as saying.
He added that the marketing campaign focused on emotion and character development.
“The audience doesn’t care about what a movie costs; they care about how it makes them feel,” Rothman said.
According to the report, lead actors Tom Holland and Zendaya promoted Spider-Man: Brand New Day alongside another major release during an international publicity tour, making appearances in cities including Madrid, London, Rome, Shanghai and Paris.
Rothman said Sony adjusted its promotional strategy to accommodate both projects and believed the exposure benefited each film.
The report said Sony launched an extensive global marketing campaign featuring partnerships with brands including Samsung, BMW, McDonald’s and Little Caesars.
Interactive promotional efforts reportedly included the SpideyTracker website, Google Search Easter eggs, TikTok campaigns, and collaborations tied to the FIFA World Cup.
The film reportedly recorded strong box office collections in several international markets, including:
- China – $132.9 million
- United Kingdom – $55.6 million
- Mexico – $43.6 million
- India – $35.4 million
- France – $31.4 million
The report also claimed the film set opening weekend records in several countries, including France, India, Brazil, Spain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Rothman expressed hope that Tom Holland would return for another Spider-Man film, while noting that Sony’s collaboration with Marvel continues on a film-by-film basis.
